If there is one thing other than water your fish needs, its filtration!
The filter is the life support system of your aquarium. Fish produce pollution from breathing and defecating and if not removed or broken down that pollution can kill your fish.
Filtering water can be done in three ways:
Mechanical filters trap debris and particles in the water by filter medium like sponge, wool or floss.
Biological filtration is perhaps the most important as without it the fish could die from ammonia poisoning, the media provides a home for the naturally occurring nitrifying bacteria.
Chemical filtration is often used to fine tune aquarium water. The most well known chemical is carbon or charcoal.
Filter types can be dived into internal and external.
Internal power filter;
these are by far the most popular and most suited to small tanks
External power filters;
external filters are large and more powerful whilst holding a lot more filter media, offering better cleaning and supports most fish.
Filter choice can depend on your budget, experience and the sort of fish you wish to keep. Our staff will be delighted to help you with the right solution for needs.
